Through activities that grow in complexity and gain in information depth, generally called trade because the sum consistently changes such that discoveries and gains occur as a function of time and human acts, intelligence giving rise to communities and economies accrue.  The constraints provided by existent non-specific architecture provide the limitations that can spontaneously compel advances. 

As communities develop, intelligence is allowed to grow as economy and trade develop: this is not only possible but likely while using existing architecture, as history itself becomes part of the principle.

Where social memory accrues and crystallizes into the substance and structure of built architecture, the novel architecture is now a culmination.

  In view of these rather difficult times and my own experiences sitting and lying around in hospitals and other facilities, still working after each elusive objective that we’re to be the fruits of the day’s labor: there seems to be room for some admission or confession to sigh over what measure could be had, or to cry over what pleasure was sadly lost. A moment, I say. Hold, I say. I look about me, and everywhere I go are people at their jobs, people seeking after what is possible in their futures, folks going to the market for more than needed yet not excess, folks who have discovered new realities in between the metrics of their previous lives. At times I am taken forward by a rush, at others entirely arrested…

Before these few months I had become busy studying a map and pouring over books new and old. I am recalling memories hidden away in unmarked records, scratched clippings, torn photographs, and unassuming symbols to be deciphered. 

How did we get here, I wondered.  To this present, yes. More importantly, we left behind a stagnation burning into an age that held us back. In that we felt bondage and we would not be free unless we marked a date in a future, a common future, a date when we would take leave together and start afresh somewhere, here. Here is the moment in time, then a future date, now a past date, or is it a date to be renewed, and to date again, to be renewed, to date again, renew, date again, and so forth? Always in our future: if not for knowing it had always already been set in stone, forever permanent in our past, that date when we broke free - how else for sure could we know? Not only are we here, new, free, we can forever date forward, another day when our commitment to be free and to make our own destiny, everyday in the future. 

No office of Immigration, no paperwork, could really tell the centuries of stashing secrets away in books, slips in dried food, heirlooms in socks, all these items that bore magic in memories to be passed onto our children, so that in the new land some day so far into the future we could not envision whatsoever, they shall remember us well.  Some new land, yet unimagined nor founded, yet discovered already in our heart and even the soul magnanimus - somehow shared in our dreams we saw vast swaths of land where all could come, where grasses grew and wildflowers, where wells could be dug and water drawn, where crops would grow, and a house could be raised.  How many centuries in the making, these eons passing by, slipping away each second into a jar of change, to be deposited in some faraway imaginary land whose existence could only become real in the purity of belief.  How we had dreamt.  Somehow in time we invented the chests that could carry our cargo much heavier than the mass itself for the meanings and magic and memories they carried, they weighed much much more than for their physics alone.  

If the journey to the voyage had been long, it was only because there was so much we did not want to discard yet must part with.  These were not some cheap possessions easily thrown and forgotten, but part of our souls and way of being.  There were some things or many, there were homes and buildings and churches, there were stores, and cobblestones and columns, and those windows we called fenestrations.  The passageways and the narrow corridors, the light wells, all the beauty and the truth in matter we had had to leave behind.  So few items were brought yet so heavy were the cargo we found solace on the boat over the high seas.

 To speak of an architectural temporaneity - there had been a gap in recent history for the appearance of architectural time.  Bringing built forms into reality had always been over durations lasting generations.  Common dwellings had not often been considered architecture in the past: one factor for this had always been that they were not deeply considered in each instance and they were raised quickly at a small cost.  Built forms serving public purposes always ranged in duration for construction depending on the scale and grandeur envisioned.  Factors relevant to the duration of enactment were not limited to the form of patronage, the collective purpose of the citizenry, the society's conditions, the tendency to include the past and the motion towards the future...

The everyday phenomenal experience of time has had a correspondence with the tick-tock of the clock, evolved over centuries and reached a certain culmination with the introduction of the clock and second hand.  The matter of architectural time is that it is grounded in the duration through which commonly beheld buildings are enacted.  It is too grounded in the scale of time through which a city is raised or is rising, assuming that through time...

The endurance of a vision and the multitude and coherence of its meaning can hold a people together.  No less, in that it can raise a city or a country, in that it is shared upon some basic consensus, it is known that we have grown of the same ideals and the same dreams.  For these to be found in the act whereupon the vision is upon the enactment of an architectural formulation, over its manifestation...

When I came across this today on spacexarch, I was reminded of how art has always be emblematic of the creative spirit. It seems often to arrive first on a scene and is the optimistic harbinger of many great things ahead. And I am also reminded of a piece of work displayed within the window on 11 Av, the artistic imagining of our imaging distant stars with our instruments. I was stricken with great joy that such undertaking as with the Hasselblad cameras on the Apollo missions and the photos produced could be once more grasped within the recognized sphere of art work. That night I had gone out onto the street roaming as though in an urgent search for something not yet disclosed for the moment. After arriving directly and viewing this work, I went back to my place feeling that perhaps I had gone home to the city where my grandfather was from or that it had serendipitously come to me?  I will return soon, I promised myself again, or I already have arrived.

Despite decades of laying down concrete cladded grounds upon which to situate the many buildings to house and perform for all the people moving into a locale, there remains much potential for the reclamation of opportunity by natural life. Many studies indicate that greenery enriches human well-being and improve health. Nature rises in spite of all obstacles. In the niches escaping notice, moss and small flowers grow seemingly without any special attention or obvious sources of water or nutrients. In abandoned corners, a plethora of unidentifiable plants grow at their own leisure and will. These are the forgotten secret gardens that rise in every town and city. Sometimes minute, sometimes unseen, they are the proof of nature’s resilience. That we too as humans draw from nature our force of life, these are as the wellsprings in urban jungles and small towns alike. If we do not even notice their existence and beauty, we should never have the courage to care for them and cultivate them to be our sources of joy.

  This is bothering me. People don't seem to be aware of ocean levels rising. A $2.1 trillion infrastructure plan that doesn't include raising sea walls or infrastructure that can absorb or redirect water. It would be nothing within a budget of that scale.

What does it take to reinforce a wall? Is concrete the strongest material we have in building? What form should reinforcement take?

-of course, it is the ground behind the immediate barrier that needs to hold

  Buildings, especially aging buildings, do have to be maintained. When necessary and appropriate, a restorer could be invited to conduct an evaluation for reference.

Something I have dealt with before

It is possible, of course, to apply a specific mode of thought to all areas of life and see the wilderness for your self through the prism of that mode of thought.

It is not, however, practical, to travel this way if it transports you to places you did not intend to go. We should guess first where we are going and what it is like and if we want to go there before we actually go there.

It is probably better to survey what the sights are that you are intending to see first, before you arrive.

It is also better to imagine a few thoughts and ideas, even hypotheses, about what you expect to encounter and discover: this is a way to maintain the intended domain for the possibilities at disclosure.

  In retrospect, I think part of the difficulty of the dilemma was the deep wish to believe that histories and their associated things that enable memory should be due each place and people.

It has been said that architecture had always arrived last on the scene, being part of a movement. It is the natural order of things. The elements of social construct are generated one by one, with intent and care, over some period of time.  Over time culture itself is cultivated. Today, it may be called a happening or an event.  Although the new arrives in each present moment or further, epoch, whether brand new or momentously, it is not aligned with the historical records for architecture to be the first on the scene.  Perhaps in the case of the ancient cave dwellers, the situation of effective architecture for dwelling and painting was the reverse because the accommodations were simply given.  However, as they came to an understanding of the dwelling as shared space which could be created on demand with the then developed skills, in fact, these dwellers discovered they could create art first.  They painted the cave walls with depictions of their environment, the world they negotiated, in such sophistication that even Picasso exclaimed that already all was known, that discoveries apparently only made in modernism were practiced from the beginning of history.  

But to return to architecture - from whence does it originate?  Has something changed so that architecture could now no longer follow the natural order of events?  Again, where does the instance of architecture begin?  This is a question worthy of consideration, as in today's information society, many things that used to happen in linear sequence, now occur simultaneously or at least in some sort of hyperlinear order.  The practice of referencing and citing literature when ideas are used in one's propositions ought to provide some guidance for making sense of the nonlinear distribution of things and events.  It is a practice that is reliable, perhaps at first sight antiquated, but nevertheless embodied in the technologies which have emerged from the practice itself.  When did Memex emerge as an idea later discovered to be viable and became hypertext?  That was before the widespread development and adoption of hypertext, or course.  The methodologies of modern science were maturing and so also the systematization of referencing other literature became developed.  The scientific community discovered that a system of reference and citation allows accountability, credit, and accuracy and precision.  It allows new and old work to be able to be traced back to their original sources.  This can be a very revealing action, to know where something had come from and what later developments are.  Well, perhaps the second possibility is not yet real.

I propose that we venture forth by attempting the following.  We plan to put forward a series of elements, let's call these core elements.  We will not put them onto the land all at the same time nor even sequentially one following another.  We will locate one site for the first one first.  How the site will be determined should be by some form of consensus, not a literal vote, but by the genesis of conditions deemed appropriate for the situation of a core element.  How should such conditions find their appearance?  This is indeed the problem.  How many designers and architects and artists and writers and everybody could contribute to identifying the local or regional problems where the land is more sparse, which require solutions?  If we were to follow the established order for the emergence of architecture as posterior, then where first problems can be identified and agreed upon, then a concerted effort to resolve them with new or adapted designs would become possible.

Has cultural amnesia erased our memories of how roads and bridges are built in synchrony with the growth of a society?  We can willfully move our communities to propose and resolve problems that had arisen due to distending.  If core elements are subject to review in context of an emergent masterplan that spans, say, a nation, secondary elements can then be built upon a view to the aesthetics of the network.  We can't allow our symptomatic tendencies towards sprawl and abandonment to lead to apathy towards the furnishing of our home and thereby and more importantly our sense of well being.  The problems of the world do not need to be before our own.  Perhaps they are not even presently relevant.  

This is where I propose we begin again.  I must emphasize the importance of some form of synchrony between putting forward infrastructure and the growth of localities.  In summary, the proposition of core and secondary elements; the invitation for identifications and proposals; the making of optimal conditions for local and regional growth; and synchronized erection of design solutions for the community and infrastructure supporting them.
