Leaving the web open

The web is a formalized construct realized in the world of cyberspace which we dreamt up in the middle to late parts of the previous century.  It has expanded exponentially at a rate that is blinding and shocking yet we are embraced by the warm ideals in which it was conceived.  The web was to be a revolutionarily democratic space of the virtual nature, an expression of a spatiality of remote and asynchronous dialogue and contemplation in all the different media which could be mustered into the digital.  

But what has happened between the time of the conception of www and now? Increasingly we find information in abundance, and the most relevant information has become as though scattered amongst the depth and breadth of data encountered from day to day.  What is more, the information technologies, subscribing to the original ideal and vision of cyberspace, is becoming distributed to utility by users from beyond demographics imaginable.

It is important to recall what is meant by sustainability.  We must consider the sustainability of the information technology industry, for yes, it has emerged as an industry, with followings and user base of a quantity beyond belief.

The implication that the web exists as a wide open blank slate means it has been and hopefully will always be an experimental ground, a playground, on which many things viable can enter trial with a real world userbase.  But ever expanding, the enterprises may be stretched thin with limited resources.  The finitude of resources means that most of the resources end up becoming dedicated to the original functions prescribed rather than the projected sphere of possibilities envisioned, leading to the reality that further developments from the same branches of notions and ideas are curtailed from growth.  This results in curtailed developments in applications, a truncation of possibilities from being extended.  Thus the web did extend in this way and that way, but hardly ever do we perceive that it has extended in all ways possible.  The inertia of the application being developed by the enterprise is bound to the requirements and expectations of the de facto userbase.  This we must inquire into.

There is a ratio of projected userbase to non-projected userbase.  If we place it into a function ratio = projected-userbase / nonprojected-userbase, then we can quickly discover to what extents is our application serving the userbase as projected and considered from the start.  If the ratio > 1, for example, we know that there is at least 50% of the demographics which we have projected the usage for.  Yet, if the ratio is greatly < 1, then we know the application is serving demographics which is likely not interested in contributing to the growth of the application, and by extension, not likely to the societal conventions and norms in which the application is situated.  Where it is in the latter case, we see the phenomenon of the apathetic user, who is in for the zero cost or very inexpensive product, but is disinterested and non-contributive to the ecology and meaning, let alone ideal, in which we created the product.

The issue of course is that information technology products can just as easily submerge into the currents of consumerism.  Not everybody can recall the dreams in which the industry was born.  This too argues for the importance of ascribing economy to the industry, in which absolute valuation of the industry's products, and the products of associated industries like computers and networking, provides context for interpreting the actual value of the products.  Notions and ideas whether generated in the pure realm of creativity or through research may also find valuation.  Values may not always be a dollar amount, but if the currency of meaning and conventions cannot be transferred or be meaningfully translated across spheres, then the disinterest displayed by the nonprojected users may result in a loss in value impossible to recuperate, a business conundrum.

Sustainability becomes an issue dependent on the economic sense for the industry.  While we are of the view that cyberspace should be extended to every single person in the world, as was in the original conception, we must be realistic in thinking possible disentanglement strategies.  One such strategy is to reinforce and grow what is at the basis real and substantial. I believe this leads to the outcome that while we must not abandon the openness of web applications, we need to invest in special applications for real world needs - to purpose tools that meet requirements for those invested in the industry's future.

The web is like an experimental ground, hopefully forever open.  Meanwhile, the notions and concepts developed into concrete but finite applications remain worthy of further investigation.  For this reason, they can be developed into hard wired services for public functions as well as secured private and commercial functions.  The economic sense lies in servicing the clientele that has supported the industry with means and capital.  This clientele has the power to add dollar values to our industry of information technology.  Within our own societies here in North America, many will pay a reasonable fee whether standalone or in package for services which are more versatile and secure.  If we consider the web to be a space for prototypal endeavors, we should hold open the space for all future possibilities. Yet, in returning a little bit of conservatism, we may yet find that the sustainability of industry will strengthen as we find avenues for coordinated private development, something we ought to have learned from working in the web for so many years.

While our enterprises cannot change much of the ideal bases we hold onto tightly as our fundamental premise, it may be time to consider special applications for public and private sectors or the field of public functions and private enterprises in general, focusing on versatility and security rather than the already in the works openness so as to reach specific needs on the continent for which we must fashion the right tools.  The web is an improbable yet already concretized expression particularized from our dream of the cyberspace.  As we move into other realms of digital frontier, such as the object-space metaverse or augmented slash generated digital presence or the digital currency www3, we should continue to subscribe to the original vision.  Passing along the vision to next generations, we can hold onto the optimism that the founding principles of cyberspace will continue to find definite manifestation, yet at the same time explore avenues to reinforce the information technology industry, one that continues to seek proper recognition and financial-economic foundations.  It is a central point to this short article that disinterested demographics in the userbases could mean failures to the model of operation including financing and ecological management.  But if this horizon is too wide for immediate solutions, we should likely need to refer back to some basics in economy and transform the older data of how economical models assisted real world transactional worlds into realizable forms, specially adapted onto the realities of our industry.  Without effective communication of the drastic nature of the gesture embracing the world with newly generated technology, something done with not a little cost but the expenses of many livelihoods, we may be shorted despite the vast scale of the industry by its activity and products.  A question remaining to be apprehended.

America? - to what extents is trade understood as mutual benefit between trading parties, what is fair especially in this climate that questions the instating of big data? - consider reciprocity in trade but also economic growth as diplomatic and generative - the value of the imaginary spanning the world

- absolute valuation - in what ways can we qualify heritage-lineage developments unique to these here parts - what can be communicated and at what magnitude-scale of qualification does communication become effective - are there ways to concretize valuation beside the quantification in dollar terms - what role can the notion of trading futures play in economic qualifications of products that are developed uniquely here - how does open sourcing play a role or lead to detriments in terms of economics - is valuation understood?

- information campaigns - can we budget for propagative information that showcases the value being generated being offered for very little costs over the world wide web - are we not creating value in the world at large - what is the value of the new - how have we come upon and hold onto a culture in which novel innovations are appreciated - how does this culture different from other profit based cultures - what does it mean to be competitive in the international community beside having the largest monetary capital gains - what do we offer over the long term which is unique and emblematized implicitly in our products - we are seeking appreciation cross borders for our products are being offered everywhere, in what types of appreciation are we interested

- the meaning of cyberspace; the meaning of metaverse; how our notions have been developed by others; our original documents, archived properly with special labels?

 The fact of appearances can tell many things, sometimes even essential things, but there has always been exceptions because there are many who travel wide and far, and experienced much, who have stories to tell that amaze and mystify, and works that awe.  The tragedy of the exceptional, I discovered in the recent year, is that the excuses lay bare the ugliness of human nature when it is turned to or cloaked in darkness.  The mob mentality was outlined in the tragic novel Lord of the Flies, in which children turned against one another and then towards the apparently weakest, the creative sort, the type who could lead them to freedom.  There was a glee in what the doomed child, if he could perceive it, would have seen as a terrible smog, a smittenness in the other children's own being tempted darkly into the dark methods and ways, the very meanness which in good society we try to avoid.  That glee was not only in committing some deep wrong, but in getting away with any responsibility, getting away with a smirk remark intended to insult and offend, getting away with signaling and setting off chains of events that could only end badly for the one then too gleefully deemed doomed.  Usually there is hardly any glee in apathy and indifference, but even that carries a certain perverted accomplishment of at least having had beat the other in the cruel race that symbolizes harmlessly the cruel world their perception makes.  

In moments like these, I reflect on the myriad experiences that made my life full.  Those secrets I hide away for when dark times come and I need a candy to prove the world is sweet, that being is light, that life is good.  In moments like these, I try not to forget those who bravely and courageously take a stand, even for just a little while, and those who maintain my right in my absence, and try to do the same so others too will have a moment of happiness to store away.  

There may be stirring feelings in harming others while imagining oneself to be some victim of some faceless cruel world, but when those are the only feelings that get you through the day, you should know corruption around you has occurred.  No wrong is committed without the conscience speaking up and that is the consciousness of a normal functional being.  Right is where good is done and the conscience is free so that consciousness and being themselves are free, so in doing good one is free and in doing right truth is won.

Whenever I think of the novel, I wonder at my sadness upon reading it.  A group of children killing themselves and targeting the one who could only lead them to freedom.  Then I chance upon reflection and in reflection I realize what great courage and masterfulness it was for Golding to speak up about the very condition of the world.  Yet, my inquiry continues and this I cannot answer: whereupon one understands the deeper meaning of the world as an expression of good, as one beheld by God in Heaven as the fruit for humankind in its individuals, why then readers are unable to appreciate that their understanding of the bad does not prevent themselves from thoughtful contemplation to effect the fullness of their being?  That in noticing what is wrong is the beginning to find the path of doing what is right, still that glee robs the being of its freedom and truth, in tempting one to be passive and inactive, or worse, in realizing one's own unbecoming actions?

So it is, now the country is on a perimeter in time as well as circumstances, and as well myself undergoing wrong after wrong, still the world it holds and the world before me continue on their humdrum glee that robs these people who effect wrongs plain to sight, for fear that in not grasping the glee they shall be robbed themselves of those naughty moments when one could commit a crime or a misdemeanor or worse, when in reality that glee has robbed them of the goodness they could be.  The goodness of what inheres is the only compass one could ever find in the world at large which could be beheld with absolute certainty, the only wealth ever known, as was taught by the Lord, the only wealth and possession which has no shade of uncertainty.  When the world outside is proved to be that which one in holism can perceive, perception itself gives itself away unless it is active and in activity realizes the self.  Yet even then uncertainty shadows what is deemed to be external, while what is known to be one's own, one's own being, one's goodness, one's perceptions, one's actions - those are brought to the realm of knowledge direct to oneself only.  So I ask now, question oneself before giving into the glee that leads to darkness.

  Despite the alarmist scenarios regarding energy prices meant to raise our awareness concerning what could become the case, ie. price-wage spirals that launch us into a depressed state, the fact of the matter stands that there is still time to respond to the sound of the alarm.  Of course, one thinks of "REACT" and jump forward in time in extrapolation to examine the tempting feelings of loss and sadness, but in actuality, we must be mindful of what may be possible in spite of the rather exaggerated state of markets and their interdependence.

Interdependence is not merely a rigid set of relations of things where if one moves another also moves.  It is a principle or a lens with which we can evaluate how different conditions and circumstances may stand to influence one another.  There are many methods with which one can "adjust" the market, many ways in which indicators can be moved by certain information or certain popular views.  Thus, we must be reserved in how we come to a judgment of the state of affairs.  A certain reservation and distance will allow us to examine the domain of possibilities that can be open with the right enquiry.  We cannot merely rely on formalized abstractions of the financial market, instrument or indicator, to prescribe what a response to rising energy prices could consist of.

Perhaps an initial question to raise would be why.  What is causing the energy costs to go up so drastically in recent years?  The reasons consist of a spectrum of factors that loosely, to say through many plausible connections, tie together in some coherence.  Such of course is not the exact constitution of the real market, but is a facsimile of the larger picture, one of lesser complexities.  This is to be addressed because oftentimes we rely on such facsimiles as a fundamental diagram but its truth value must be questioned if we are to find certain degrees of freedom through which to examine additional possible solutions, ie. we must think outside the box.  The problem of the truth value to the facsimiles composed of a network of indicators drawn from the real market is to do with that they were originally representational and thus through representation certain facts are ascribed but also that information loss is inevitable.

The point of referring back to the real market and indeed the real society in which a small fact of the dollar value to energy is found is to question the basic premises or phenomena in which the change in dollar value to energy is realized.  What is the first proposition by those who propound that rise in energy costs is irreversible and necessary?  In one case, it is referral to the maxim of supply and demand.  If demand continues to rise and supply remains limited then it stands to reason that the cost of the commodity should go up.  Whether this is the case remains an open topic to investigate in the specifics of supplies being shorted somehow, perhaps in response to rising demand across the world.

This is a point not to brush aside because we must question how the demand has risen.  The simple answer is that there are more factories and cars that require the use of fossil fuels.  Yet this answer had not addressed the matter of the how of usage and its implications referring back to the manner with which energy is used and whether the energy used produces excesses in society that turns to waste or if it produces a consumption that is productive in the end, ie. realizing some good evaluated to be worthwhile and is more than the indulgence of consumption.  It must be noted that how we consume energy and to what ends energy consumed is directed is a question to be addressed at different levels from the individual to the larger in-organizing.  For instance, at the level of the individual, it does not make sense to visit the supermarket ten times a month when once would suffice; or at the level of a import-export company, it does not make sense to import large shipments of oranges from a foreign country when the oranges two states over are cheaper and require less fuel to transport.

But why are such examples relevant in any way?  It is because the demand and supply and costs was never a simple equation as is popularly and mythically believed.  The simple equation negates the fact that a society was never a rigid organization with definite protocols whose people have no ability to change and adapt.  One way to see a counter to rising energy price, as due to proportionally decreasing supply, would obviously be decreasing the total sum of energy being consumed.  While this may seem like a rather obvious proposition and thus is weak in propositional value, in reality, to decrease the total sum of energy consumed is no simple task.  It is worthwhile because where domestically, the total sum of money squandered onto energy that for instance produces only excesses to be turned into waste is managed, the price of energy that maintains the market as a price point can have limited effects onto the rest of the markets.  Intuition guides that delimiting the effect of changing energy price points would delimit the perpetuation of effects into other industries, thus the rest of the market.  To be more concise, the threat of inflation broadening out due to increasing energy price could in this way be managed.

The notion of managing usage has the most important consequence of separating the volatile energy market from the rest of the market.  The term "economy" actually denotes more than the market, and implicates the social behavior that in totality inclusive of the various market mechanisms and financial indicators as well as common prices and buying behaviors.   Conservatism is a notion we must broadcast across the domestic landscapes.  While pointing fingers to developing nations is fine and good and provide certain checks on behaviors by the international community by moderating views and perspectives, it is only one avenue, and it is one that excludes our own people from examining the basis of the problem domestically.  It is a fact that in America our consumption overall is less than some other countries, but the fact of the matter stands that even so, the consumption is excessive as is normally acceptable to use energy as can be afforded.  Thus, conservatism is a notion that requires expanding and elaborating, so that the finer details can be observed by actors at different levels.  It is a notion powerful enough to hold together the different levels of actors in society, such that adoption could express the will of the nation.  It is one idea that should not be brushed aside for our behaviors are exemplary for the rest of the world.

The separation of the fossil fuel market through the moderation and even decrease in energy usage domestically should probably be led to the effect that energy prices can no longer be so immediately driven up by increasing demand here despite rising costs.  The rationale is that where demand decreases it becomes possible that the price point of fossil fuel could be managed within the borders.  As behavior towards energy change domestically, to say less energy is usurped here so that demand is stable and non-increasing, or even, decreasing. than it becomes possible for those in the market to evaluate the possibilities in interventions and mechanisms that work out the balance affecting the price point domestically based on domestic behavior.  We always talk of stronger borders but a border is not a physical wall necessarily, but consist of definitions that guide behavior and determinations for those geopolitical locales interior to the boundary.

But of course the utility of energy is often associated with innovative growth.  Management consists not only of adjusting the increase or decrease of usage and price points, but in investing wisely.  Energy of course is a kind of capital.  There is a finite supply of it at any given moment.  To invest wisely this capital of energy is something which can be taken to task at many different levels.  It is by this rationale that the notion of conservatism has not just to do with delimiting or ceasing usage, but rather to do with being reserved in judging how best to utilize it.  On the way, smart investment of energy will lead to more positive and productive outcomes, as well, it is likely that a decrease of consumption could be had.  To say that energy consumption is correlated with productive activity is to note that we shall not move towards ceasing its usage.  Nevertheless, it is a fact that if we can moderate and delimit the proliferation of effects due to increasing prices in particularly to the rest of the market, we will bide our time.  

Time for what?  Of course, it is to move the inertia of research and development of alternatives to fossil fuels.  As nothing happens in a day, to shift investments into alternatives to this form of energy requires time and effort.  Such research not only opens up alternative vistas in energy harvesting and use, such research will encompass many factors that must be taken into the balance of the bigger picture consisting of efforts from many industries and fields of discipline and of concerns in regards the environment of planet Earth.

  Going to the Moon is very important for the future of humanity.  The promise of peace as the natural state of being beckons where beyond the earth where our lineages have had such a long record of development.  What had been difficult centuries and millennia before were overcome in many ways so that peace is possible.  Peace is not only the beginning but the goal.  To be together without lamely thinking ourselves as like unthinking beings out for gains lasting a moment or two - we are beings that dream and plan and work in cooperation to realize the worthwhile realities.  The idea that the moon is a new beginning is the idea that we can start anew.  It is the new frontier in the sense that the Americas has been the new world.  The land of opportunity and dreams, the society of peace and order.  

The sight of the bright white moon in its phase strikes me with a profound sense of contentment and reassurance.  The presence of the first and immediate celestial body.  A place we haven’t been, a place we will soon go.  Everything is possible.  The way there will be made.  That this one here is possible makes the rest across the incomprehensibility in vastness also there and teeming with the possibility of real existence.  To make this first step, the importance cannot be overstated.  Just as venturing from the stasis of tradition to a realm of pure potential was the foundation in human action that allow the dream of the ideals and values defining societies today in the Americas.  What is freedom?  What is hard work?  What is making?  The move to the moon will not be merely a duplication of circumstances and choices.  Just the same, the endeavors into space will bring those to new heights of human experience.  What these realities could be we will never discover should we not venture beyond this home of a vibrant and lush garden. 

Carl Sagan wrote that we are upon the cosmic shore gazing into the deep oceans of space.  The grand stage of unknown proportions from these sittings of such modest proportion.  The amphitheater the presents an infinite count of drama depicting all that could be possible beyond the reach of any or all of our imagination.  What presence, what meaning could be discovered and made that I am this one, here, this small subjectivity, that exists within what is all and could contemplate my own existence within all that is and changes.  From the moon is a new vantage offering a view into what surrounds us everyday and every moment, which yet eludes us as we travel through the wonderful devices of our own making, under the firmament of the blue sky.

  Concerning the matter of information society as termed - complicated a concept and complex the processes that give rise to such as a society upon information. Finer details require theoretical exposition not willing to be attempted on this platform at this very moment, but a few notes should suffice to see the relevance of information in day to day decision making as relevant to the generative role society has towards such as the notion of information society as called.  The economy, in this instance, shall be our grounding moment for these notes.

The significance of information is that it is different and so distinguished from data.  Information has an active aspect, in that it's transforming or being transformed into information, and it may be transformative upon individuals' thinking, modes of action, or the outlook and actions of associations.  Data, by contrast, is what is given, inert and untransformed, it stands as some given bits and pieces, of which no sense could be made until such time as a spirited individual or enterprise act on it.  This is different too from the term knowledge, but that is a matter concerning the applicable facts that become assimilated into one's understanding and mode of comprehension of the world or specifics in the world generally.

What meaning is relevant here concerning information in society, specifically, economics and the growth of economies?  Over recent history, say the last century and a half, much activity previous and concurrent then generated many associations and labels which remain in use today.  Today, they are considered common and shared, and notably, given; even though they may be subject to change and transformation, generally, they are established and few changes are expected.  Nevertheless, the fact of their existence should be questioned to some extent because how they are in solid form does not presuppose the fact that all aspects of their way of existence could be appropriate in a changing world.

The specific dimension of information I wish to address here is the wealth of activity and thoughts that precede the generation of a label or association.  In that previously in the "modern" age initializing, there were not much in the forms solidified into labels and organizations.  So, by this way, they were generated in the making and thus seem to arrive quite naturally without a blank slate lying before.  As is the case with any drawing on a blank canvas, the possibilities were infinite, virtually.  Anything seems to be up for grabs and there were no obstacles to overcome beside those that arrive serendipitously.  In the process, the best ideas won out, for there were not a complex canvas, or already painted, there.

In a social organizing, there is the idea of "bottom-up" or "top-down".  What is relevant to our thinking here is that really, activities including interactions, communication, accounts, exchanges, trade, etc, are the bases that constitute any associations, which were in fact "in-constituting".  What has changed, in a nut shell, from a century ago, other than the obvious fact that we have already generated in the grounds a complexity of enterprises, boards, policies, and organizations?

The technology.  There is nowadays a myriad of technological instances, technology focused enterprises, and also a technological surround.  By if our view were to shift forward into the future, and we glance back, we would realize that most of what we think of extraordinary advances would be nascent advances that will appear lovely.  This is the way we see the clock today.  That too generated an array of disorder towards order, and all took time.

The emphasis I wish to draw here is that in each case of an economic problem, we must destabilize our notion of what is already there.  The plan is what was laid out before, and is not in some state of existence.  But we must question, to what ends, to what goals, to what objectives.  Such premises our search for economic stability and growth.

The virtual encompasses much.  As does the term information.  I continue to advocate that we recover the in person thinking of each of us and each of our community as situating a ground of economic opportunities.  Such is a consideration of our relations in not only trade and exchange, which needs not be entirely like a clockwork train schedule for example for we can adapt to a different sort of living too, but also in friendship.  Where one town forms a trade relation with another township, because many individuals find from both townships actual benefits from trading with one another, this is another example, we should see that economic ties internal to the region benefit and strengthen.  To say this could occur at scale is to say that if this were to happen in different parts of the country, in multiple times, then ultimately, there are stronger internal friendships inside the country that have solidified in trades.  At a smaller scale, friendships with externalization, for instance, the sharing of music between friends whether by cd's or mp3s, would have for itself a demonstration of friendship.  Same, for that matter, of trading baking goods for a knitted quilt.

Essentially, we over-complexify things at times.  For good reasons, in many cases.  The generation of virtual economy for example I see one way would be to have market that advertises future improvements of products.  A fairly difficult problem.  Nevertheless, it goes to show that many many many possibilities are still possible.  Not always do we have to move big pieces or complexify things to reach probable solutions good for many parties.

A few thoughts of "information" - to inform, to act upon, to receive, to change and transform.  The depth is the level of activity by citizenry that supports the economy and is the sine quoi non acting as foundation for the happiness that qualifies the economy ultimately.  In economic sense, the external activities indicating external relations seemingly trivial to many managing larger pieces are in fact crucial for many reasons including that democratic decision making becomes possible when a citizenry is informed as well as that the movement of citizens ultimately affect the apparent inertia of an economy.  So, to take a larger leap, one sees that without momentum by citizenry, the so called virtual economy is unlikely to have the same or expected propulsive potential for take-off, though this point has not been sufficiently argued here.

 was talking with alec at pixel today and he is regularly blogging 7 things on his aim profile.. inspired and reminded me it's about time to put up my own personal blog, especially with 7 or 8 blog spaces for coordinating and managing work stuff, probably need a reflective space too. anyway, here it is. =)

   When the air is very cold and still about near the ground and the ground frozen below the surface, the surface of the ground is warmer slightly than the ground below and much warmer than the air above, there is a gradient of warmth in the air floating above the ground.  At the height of the human being, the air is still noticeably warmer though the word warm is somewhat inappropriate for it is still below the temperature at which water freezes by quite a bit.  Yet, in this gradient, the air near the ground within the human height is markedly less cold than it should be, and stiller by my observation than the thick and slow air current above.  At this temperature within the human height, and slightly above, this air is susceptible for the formation of very small ice crystal like snow.  The current of air circulating is multiple and many and fairly delicate, causing the ice crystals generated to float upon them and to move in different curvatures towards changing directions.  In this way, ice crystal resembling that of the weather of snow about the person could be formed and be seen to circulate.  The experience remains mysterious: this is a speculative observation based in analysis of a phenomenon observed.  To be recorded into observation journal.  Temperature: approx -32 to -34 degrees celcius.  Weather: non-snowing.  Sky: white not greyish. Wind: none.  Additional comments: subjectively, there was a phenomenon of incandescence in the ice crystal and air circulating about my person.

An aspect that must be mentioned before entering another subject concerning industry is that of happiness and quality of life.  The state of having meaning and wellness has become known to not solely rely on material goods in the sense of consumer goods.  Some find that spirituality is an ultimate good towards which they work.  Others find a multitude of goods in the world which compose a mosaic of material goods in the sense of goods in the material world.  Yet others find that there is good in ideals and principles.  Many schools of thought and activities now existent in the country for this are and will continue to be of new worlds.  There are other worlds on this earth that have many forms of happiness.  Happiness and meaning are very significant factors to the quality of life though notions of abrupt changes for each ourselves as they occur to our minds or lives should be noted and treated with a measure of caution.
